David plays lead guitar in the band and on the album recordings.
As a youngster, I grew up in church for the most part. My parents were born again and saved by the blood of Jesus when I was about 6 years old. The first church we attended was the First Pentecostal Church on 282 Stelton Rd in Xenia, Ohio. It was at that church where I was taught about Jesus and what a wonderful and loving Savior He is. We attended FPC for about 6 or 7 years back then, but it was at a little church in Spring Valley, Ohio where I first really met Jesus and surrendered to Him "All" as my Lord and Savior. I got saved that night laying under a church pew flat on my back at the age of 12. Previously, I had started playing guitar at the age of 6, but now I had a whole new outlook on my talent and would soon see the Lord bless my talent, and help it to grow more than I could ever dream possible for Him. I said many times, "I was God taught from the start." Afterward, I played in church and with my family for many years while honing my talent. Later at the age of 18, a Christian Country Band came to a church that I had been attending at that time (Cincinnati Avenue Church of God), and of course, back then, Christian Country really hadn’t "taken off" just yet, but it soon sure did alright enough. I soon found it to be my favorite style of Gospel Music and little did I know God was providing to me an opportunity, that very night, to grow my talent. The name of that Christian Country Band was “The Dalton Gang” managed by Tom Dalton and he asked my brother and me if we would play for them at a concert that they were doing at a nearby high school in Hillsboro, Ohio. We agreed to play, and not long after that Tom offered me a job playing lead guitar for The Dalton Gang. This would begin another part or chapter in my journey of music. In recalling, it was with this band that I learned what Musical ethics was all about and began to hon my talents, yet even more. To this day, I can still remember something that happened while playing mind.
The story goes, We were playing at church one night and Justin Looper the bass guitar player and baritone vocal singer, turned around to me (while smiling from ear to ear) and said, “Turn it down. You’re too loud.” It was at that very moment I understood, and he was right...Gospel Music Ethics 101. "The message must be heard in the song, or it's not the gospel."
I learned that and much more playing for The Dalton Gang band that would stay with me throughout my life and collectively making me the musician/christian I am today.
Several years later I continued playing gospel music and singing with my brother and his wife, Jimmy and Crystal Haning which included my cousin Johnny Estle as the drummer. We formed the band New Generation who would ultimately resolve into The Hanings.
Down through the years I have played with other musicians and bands as well. Once, I even got to set in with Coleman Looper and The Way Travelers, that was a treat and memorable mile-marking experience as well!
Later in 2018, from out of the blue, I was asked by my cousin Johnny Estle if I would consider playing for a band in concert at a nearby church in Dayton, Ohio at Greenview Calvary Tabernacle Church? That night, I accepted the invitation, and ever since I have been playing with Dan Looper and Mountain Sound band.
That’s right!... Dan Looper and Mountain Sound, who would believe it?. If you were tracking, that's incredible how God works! By this I mean, what was meant to be a one-night "set-in" concert turned into multiple miles of singing in concerts and working for the Lord!
The more we get together to pray, play, and practice, the more we see God work, and become an even more cohesive band. Just as He promised, God is doing great things in our efforts.
Just recently we completed and released our debut album “The Lord Will Provide” back in November 2020. My buddy Dan Looper says "we redeemed the time even during a very restrictive year from traveling, and God is continually opening doors for us." Doors I never thought possible I might add, and the good news is "I’m still on the Journey!"
